Annual Meeting 2018Spencer Crews of Lauritzen Gardens
Join WBG on Th. 11/1, from 6-8pm at The Olmsted for our 2018 Annual meeting, featuring guest speaker Spencer Crews, Executive Director Emeritus of Lauritzen Gardens in Omaha, another botanical garden built on a former landfill.
Spencer Crews began his tenure in 1996 as the first executive director and led the organization for 22 years. He earned a B.S. in landscape architecture from Iowa State University, and a M.P.A. in not-for-profit management, from the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
As a trained landscape architect and horticulturist, he utilized a hands-on approach to fundraising, master planning, garden design, and construction of Omaha’s new 100-acre botanical center, resulting in more than $70 million of capital investment in fifteen short years. His vision of regionalism for the institution conveys the subtle beauty of the Midwest and Great Plains in the heart of downtown Omaha. Although he was the first and only full-time employee when he began, Spencer grew Lauritzen Gardens to a staff of 70 with annual visitation exceeding 270,000. More on Spencer Crews here
So come enjoy dinner and an enlightening talk with fellow WBG members on the successes and challenges of repurposing and reviving this kind of land.
