The presentation will begin at 6:45 pm with a Q&A to follow.\n\nTickets: $25 for WBG Members and $35 for non-members \n\nsold out\n\nIf you would like to be added to the waitlist\, please email info@waterfrontgardens.org with your name and the number of tickets you would like to reserve\, should they become available.\n\n\n\nProudly presented by:\n\n\n\n\nJapanese Gardens on Foreign Soil: The Delicate Balance of Authenticity and Adaptation in Building the Japanese Garden\nBuilding a Japanese garden in a foreign land is a challenging endeavor and a joyful art at the same time. A well designed and skillfully constructed Japanese garden in other parts of the world can bring forth a tangible authenticity. However\, Japanese garden authenticity is quite difficult to attain. It takes both a properly trained and experienced gardener with the correct understanding and a decided amount of courage to apply the proper level of adaptation. With decades of experience in his adopted United States\, Sadafumi-san examines and illustrates how Japanese garden authenticity is defined\, how it is crafted and justified in the design\, and how construction and maintenance plays out for a Japanese garden in a non-native land.\n\nAbout the Speaker:\n\n\n\n\nSadafumi (Sada) Uchiyama is the Chief Curator and Director of International Japanese Garden Training Center (TC) at the Portland Japanese Garden (PJG). Sada is a fourth generation Japanese gardener from southern Japan where his family has been involved in gardening for over a century. He was Garden Curator for twelve years to oversee the construction and maintenance of the Portland Japanese Garden before his appointment as the PJG’s first Chief Curator in October 2020. Prior to his career as Garden Curator then Chief Curator\, he also served as a Vice President on the Board of Directors and continues to serve on advisory committees for the Portland Japanese Garden.
