Fall Hiking Series

The Parklands of Floyds Fork Fall Hiking Series

The Parklands invites you to join us this fall on one of five guided hiking opportunities. The hikes will explore the natural history of the land through time with Natural Areas Manager, Michael Gaige.

Wednesday, October 6 5:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m

Foundations: Geology of the Fork

Broad Run Park

The walk will explore the geologic foundation of the Fork near Broad Run Park. We will discuss the rock types found here and their formation, the deep-time history of the place, the formation of the river valley, fossils, sinkholes and more. Participants should be prepared to walk off trail for about a mile and traverse up and down steep slopes.

Monday, October 11 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. Columbus Day

Eastern Deciduous Forest

Turkey Run Park

If left to its own accord, Kentucky would be dominated by forest. The eastern deciduous forest is the largest and, in some ways, most diverse temperate deciduous forest in the world. On this walk we will explore the forest from its deep-time roots to the modern day ecology. Participants should be prepared to walk about 2 miles off trails over uneven terrain.

Tuesday, October 26 5:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

Native America

Pope Lick Park

What did this region look like 500 years ago? How did people live on the land? What evidence of this can we see today? On this walk we will try to reconstruct the cultural story of Floyds Fork from the arrival of humans up to 500 years ago. We will look at some very old trees, discover the origins of agriculture, and discuss some of the missing pieces of the landscape.  Participants should be prepared to walk about 2 miles off trails over uneven terrain.

Saturday, October 30 9 a.m.- 11 a.m.

Hands on the Land

Turkey Run Park

One cannot understand the modern day landscape without understanding the changes that have occurred in the region since colonial settlement. From planting fields and stringing fences to stonewalls and timber, we will explore the best places in Floyds Fork that tell these stories. Participants should be prepared to walk about 2 miles off trails over uneven terrain. For those looking for an intense hiking experience- sign up for the Half-Day Adventure
