How many orchid species can be found in the U.S? How can we protect them?

Our instructor, Jim Burnett, is back to answer these questions and more in a class focused on temperate orchid species in North America. In addition, there will be a detailed discussion focused on cultivation of terrestrial orchids.

With this in-person class you will also become more familiar with the their anatomy. Learn about the different genera you may find while hiking. Discuss culitivating these hardy plants through different potting mix, sit prep, disease and weed control.

Instructor: Jim Burnett

Jim Burnett is a retired science instructor from Olney Central College in Illinois, where he taught an orchid biology class that shared the science and hobbyist lifestyle of orchid growing to undergraduates and community members alike.

** All students (regardless of vaccination status) are required to practice social distancing and wear a face mask. Hand sanitizer stations will be provided.

Refund Policy

Although we are unable to refund registration fees in the case of cancellation by the purchaser, the paid registration can be transferred to another student. In this case, please notify Kat Rivers at krivers@waterfrontgardens.org or 502-276-5404 with the name of who will attend in your place. Multi-event series cannot be transferred. In the event that Waterfront Botanical Gardens cancels a class for any reason (e.g. low enrollment, instructor unavailability, natural hazard, etc.), we will attempt to reschedule the class or event. If there is no reschedule, the purchaser will be issued a full refund. Refunds are issued by check only. Beargrass Canoe Tours have a different policy with no refunds under any circumstance because of river and weather volatility.

Emergency Cancellation

In the event of an emergency cancellation, the Gardens will contact registered students with a cancellation notice (always provide/maintain a current email address and phone number so that we may notify you of an emergency or cancellation). The Gardens will attempt to reschedule classes cancelled due to an emergency event if possible.
