$15
Sunday, August 16
2 – 3:15 pm
Graeser Family Education Center
$15, $10 WBG members (use code WBGMEMBER at checkout to receive discount)

Lee Squires, a bonsai grower for over 48 years with around 50 trees in his collection, will lead an introduction to bonsai lecture in anticipation of WBG’s Japanese Garden project.

Lee will share the history of bonsai and what makes a tree or plant a bonsai. He will go over indoor vs. outdoor bonsai to clear up any confusion about where they may be successfully grown, how to start a bonsai, and what artistic “rules” you should follow. He will discuss in-depth the five basic styles of bonsai, pot selection, proper tools, soil composition, fertilizing, pest control, potting and repotting, displaying your bonsai, and winter care.

Several bonsai will be on display and their creation discussed. The cost of bonsai will be a topic for those interested in growing their own or purchasing an already finished plant. Finally, Lee will hold a raffle giveaway for a tropical elephant bush bonsai — perfect for a specimen houseplant.

Social distancing and facemasks will be required during this indoor lecture program.

Refund Policy

Although we are unable to refund registration fees in the case of cancellation by the purchaser, the paid registration can be transferred to another student. In this case, please notify Allison Whitehouse at awhitehouse@waterfrontgardens.org or 502-276-5404 with the name of who will attend in your place. Multi-event series cannot be transferred. In the event that Waterfront Botanical Gardens cancels a class for any reason (e.g. low enrollment, instructor unavailability, natural hazard, etc.), we will attempt to reschedule the class or event. If there is no reschedule, the purchaser will be issued a full refund. Refunds are issued by check only. Beargrass Canoe Tours have a different policy with no refunds under any circumstance because of river and weather volatility.

Emergency Cancellation

In the event of an emergency cancellation, the Gardens will contact registered students with a cancellation notice (always provide/maintain a current email address and phone number so that we may notify you of an emergency or cancellation). The Gardens will attempt to reschedule classes cancelled due to an emergency event if possible.
