“Airplanes in the Garden – A Lesson from the Gardener”
Joan will share her passion for monarch butterflies and a burning desire to educate and excite children and adults about these wonders of nature. You’ll also see footage of when Joan visits a school to share the fictional story that was inspired by the real-life ‘lab assistants’, Sergio and Stanley. You’ll discover why Joan decided to write such a book.
Joan Z. Calder is an author, horticulturist, and life-long gardener. She enjoys playing in the dirt and currently lives in Santa Barbara, California. She grew up learning about gardening on a dairy farm in Cato, Wisconsin. After receiving a B.A. in Social Work and holding various jobs, she returned to school to follow her passion, earning a degree in Ornamental Horticulture.
Joan managed the Greenhouse for Ecology, Evolution, and Marine Biology at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and teaches garden design classes through the Santa Barbara City College Center for Lifelong Learning.
